Overview
SunshineList makes Ontario's public sector salary data easy to explore. Every year, the Government of Ontario publishes the “Sunshine List” — a disclosure of all public sector employees who earned $100,000 or more in the previous calendar year.
The Sunshine List
The Sunshine List is mandated by the Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act, 1996. Under this legislation, organizations that receive public funding from the Province of Ontario must disclose the names, positions, salaries, and taxable benefits of employees paid $100,000 or more in a calendar year. The intent of the Act is to promote transparency and accountability in the use of public funds.
Data Coverage
SunshineList includes data from 1996 through 2024, covering nearly three decades of public sector compensation. The dataset contains over 300,000 unique employee records across sectors including municipalities, hospitals, school boards, universities, crown agencies, the Ontario Public Service, and more.
Data Source
All salary data is sourced from the Ontario Open Data Catalogue, published under the Open Government Licence — Ontario. The data is provided as-is by the Government of Ontario.
